Slovenia 2003
Marble trout
OverviewThe emerald green Soča river is stunning and for that reason also called the pearl of Slovenia. The area around Bovec (upper Soča) is fabulous. The only downside is the number of canoes that enter the water between 10am and 5pm. So you better plan your fly fishing before or after that time window. Most flyfishers travel to this little paradise to chase marble trout with a fly. However, most marble trout in the river are not 100% marble but a hybride between brown trout and marble trout. If the trout has a any red dots at all (most likely in the adipose fin) it is a hybride. Neverthless they are true beauties. The graying here have yellow bellies and after hook-up they jump and give you a good fight. The area is overfished to say the least but if you pick your spots and the right hours you can have some fabulous 'sight' and 'twilight' fishing.
A 9ft #5 fly rod would be pretty average for the trout and grayling fishing in the Soča. A New Zealand Strike indicator set will help you make all indicators you may need when nymphing. In summer look for the grayling in shallow, fast, oxigen rich water. To get down take some weighted nymphs and make your leader long enough to reach the right depth.
