Denmark 2011
Baltic sea trout
OverviewOver the years we have done many trips to Denmark. Love the surroundings, crystal clear sea water and beautiful sea trout. I usually fish an Airflo slow intermediate 6/7 sixth sense line with a 12ft leader (28/00). Sea trout can be picky so you'll need flies from #12 to #2. This trip fish were scarce so I decided to focus on a big (Partridge CS11#4) white spey hackle shrimp with fluo orange eyes. It paid off! On the east coast of the island Funen I hooked and landed this 80cm sea trout.
in general we use 9'6" #7 rods fly fishing for sea trout in Denmark. Take a fly reel with a sealed drag system. The saltwater is hard on gear so reels will get into problems if the drag is not sealed. And even if they are sealed (no reel is fully saltwater proof) rinse (all gear used in saltwater) with freshwater after each fishing day.
Tips:
How to find hot spots? Use Google earth to find potental good areas. When in the area look for reefs, tidal current seems, sea grass fields, drops, surface activity and so on.
Start fishing from the bank. Sea trout can be very close to shore so always cover the shoreline before stepping into the water.
Try differend 'size' flies. At times the sea trout will eat big streamers but we experienced 'scud only' feeding sessions aswell. So be prepared and take the right flies. From scuds to shrimp, baitfish to sandworm immitations.
